Inclusive soft goods hardware
Students from ECAL’s Bachelor’s degree program in Industrial Design designed a fastening systems for clothing, bags and accessories, with the aim of making them more inclusive in collaboration with ASA-Handicap mental and the senior-lab. Seniors from the senior-lab actively participated by testing and advising on the ideas. The products were presented at a conference and exhibited at Mudac in Lausanne at the end of the semester.
This project had a profound impact on the seniors who took part in it. They greatly enjoyed these moments of intergenerational sharing.
“I was touched by the engagement of the ECAL students. Their respect and empathy impressed me very much. Testing their products and seeing the design evolve throughout the project thanks to our feedback was a real pleasure. I was also surprised by the joyful atmosphere and the numerous moments of sharing, such as dedications, selfies, and discussions, both during and outside of work sessions and exhibitions.”
Soft goods accessories play a key role in the way we appear and experience such accessories. When mobility is impaired, fastening systems can become a real challenge. It is thus essential, to improve users’ experience, to design other systems that consider that different users have different physical abilities. An explanatory video and several photos are available on the ECAL website: INCLUSIVE SOFT GOODS HARDWARE
